Minitunes: a music player for Linux that is worth knowing

I found a page listing author of a bill that did not even have a downloadable version, but pledged: Minitunes.

And behold, returning to site find that there is already a version of Minitunes for download, and even in version 0.1.1 it's probably one of best music players that have arisen in Linux.

Presented as a music player with same simplicity of MiniTube , Minitunes is extremely lightweight and simple to use: you define directory where all songs are stored, and program will read and rank all songs (this first version, I felt a some delay in reading hard drive, but I am speaking of several GB of music).

Ending to classify music, you'll see a screen like above, with all songs on right and left hand navigation, and can filter by artist, album or directories.

Cool, but how do I install?

In any distro you can download source code and compile program following instructions. In Ubuntu, there is already a repository with a package. Minitunes deb. To install, simply run following commands in Terminal to install:
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8 && sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get install libqt4-network libqt4-dbus libqt4-sql-sqlite libtag1c2a phonon-backend-gstreamer gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
  • sudo apt-get install minitunes

Of course you can install all Package Manager, just need to add ppa repository: nilarimogard/webupd8 before. With Minitunes installed, it will already be available in Multimedia menu. By opening up first screen will look similar to this:

Then just select directory (may be even via network or on a portable hard drive) and wait. Apart from some (few) features, such as creating playlists and full screen, Minitunes also connects to Last.fm and low music information such as album art, lyrics and photo of artist.

The Minitunes is still in early stages, but worth watching project, submit bugs, and talk with author. As it stands, does not take long and Minitunes becomes default player on some distros.
